No roads cross the heart of Shirakami-Sanchi, and that is the point: these mountains in northern Honshu guard the last untouched expanse of the Siebold's beech forest that once cloaked much of northern Japan. Black bears and serows roam beneath the canopy, and 87 bird species have been recorded here. Inscribed by UNESCO in 1993 among Japan's first natural World Heritage sites, the range rewards hikers on its fringes with waterfalls and mossy ravines.
