A port town on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika, terminus of the central railway and jumping-off point for the chimpanzee parks of Gombe and Mahale. The century-old MV Liemba, a German warship turned ferry, and nearby Ujiji of Stanley-and-Livingstone fame add historical texture.
