A vast basin of canals, waterwheels, and farmland an hour southwest of Cairo, watered by a branch of the Nile since pharaonic times. The city makes a base for the pottery village of Tunis, the ruins of Karanis, and desert excursions toward the lakes and fossil valleys beyond.
