A remnant of the ancient Lake Moeris, this brackish lake edges the Faiyum depression with fishing villages on one shore and open desert on the other. It is one of Egypt's key wintering grounds for waterbirds, and the ruined Ptolemaic temple of Qasr Qarun stands near its western end.
