Founded from nothing on Trajan's orders in AD 100, Timgad is the Roman grid at its purest: a square military colony on the slopes of the Aurès mountains, its streets crossing at right angles about the cardo and decumanus. Legionary veterans settled the town, and its triumphal arch, theatre, library and forum still articulate the ideal of Roman urban order carried into Africa. UNESCO inscribed Timgad on the World Heritage List in 1982.
