Greek temples, a Carthusian monastery and wild coastal mountains share a single inscription in the Cilento, the rugged country south of the Amalfi Coast. Paestum's Doric temples rank among the best preserved of Magna Graecia; Velia was home to the Eleatic philosophers; the vast Certosa di Padula grew into one of Europe's largest monasteries. UNESCO listed the national park with its archaeological sites in 1998 as a World Heritage cultural landscape where Greek colonists met inland peoples.
