South of Salerno on the coastal plain, Paestum preserves three Greek Doric temples of exceptional completeness built between the 6th and 5th centuries BCE, including the so-called Temple of Neptune, one of the largest and best-preserved Doric temples in existence. The site museum holds the Tomb of the Diver fresco, a unique example of ancient Greek figural painting found intact in a burial context. The flat agricultural plain surrounding the ruins provides unobstructed views and long shadows at dawn.
