The floors are the treasure at Villa Romana del Casale, a lavish 4th-century Roman country residence near Piazza Armerina in the Sicilian interior. Buried under mud for centuries and thus protected, its rooms preserve the richest ensemble of Roman mosaics still in place anywhere — hunting scenes, mythological epics and the famous 'bikini girls' athletes. UNESCO granted the villa World Heritage status in 1997 as a matchless window on late-imperial luxury.
