The small inland city of Piazza Armerina in central Sicily is the access point for the Villa Romana del Casale, a late Roman imperial hunting lodge whose floors contain the most extensive and best-preserved mosaic program in the world, covering over 3,500 square meters. The famous Bikini Girls mosaic depicts female athletes in a composition that has no parallel in Roman art. The medieval upper town, with its Norman castle and baroque cathedral, merits a separate visit.
