Archaeological Area of Agrigento

Along a ridge south of modern Agrigento stands the Valley of the Temples, where a line of golden Doric temples marks ancient Akragas, founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC and once among the mightiest cities of the Mediterranean. The Temple of Concordia ranks with the best-preserved Greek temples anywhere. UNESCO inscribed the archaeological area in 1997, and much of the ancient city still waits underground beneath olive groves and almond orchards.
