The Trulli of Alberobello

Whitewashed walls and grey stone cones give Alberobello a skyline unlike anywhere else in Italy. Its trulli — mortarless limestone houses roofed with corbelled slabs — carry a prehistoric building technique into the streets of a living Apulian town, where more than a thousand of them cluster in the Rione Monti and Aia Piccola quarters. UNESCO recognised the ensemble as World Heritage in 1996, a tribute to drystone craft handed down across countless generations.
