The town of Alberobello in the Murge plateau contains the densest concentration of trulli, the traditional Pugliese dry-stone dwellings distinguished by conical limestone roofs. The Rione Monti district holds over 1,000 of these structures on a hillside of narrow lanes, and the distinctive silhouettes are best captured from the raised viewpoint on Via Monte San Michele. The whitewashed walls and grey stone caps are particularly graphic at dawn before visitors arrive.
