Necropolis of Bet She’arim: A Landmark of Jewish Renewal

After the second Jewish revolt against Roman rule failed, Jewish burial turned to Bet She'arim. From the 2nd century AD its catacombs southeast of Haifa became the primary burial place beyond Jerusalem, filling with inscriptions in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek and Palmyrene alongside a wealth of artworks. The necropolis testifies to ancient Judaism renewed under Rabbi Judah the Patriarch after 135 AD. UNESCO inscribed Bet She'arim in 2015.
