Megiddo, Hazor and Beer Sheba are cities stacked upon cities: tels, the settlement mounds typical of the eastern Mediterranean, of which Israel counts more than 200. These three hold substantial remains of towns with biblical connections and some of the Levant's finest Iron Age underground water systems, engineered for dense urban communities — evidence of centralized authority, productive agriculture and command of trade routes across millennia. UNESCO inscribed the tels in 2005.
