Old City of Acre

Acre layers city upon city. Settled without interruption since Phoenician times, today's walled port wears the face of an 18th- and 19th-century Ottoman town — citadel, mosques, khans and baths — while beneath and beside the streets the Crusader town of 1104-1291 survives almost intact, an exceptional record of the city that served the medieval Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem as its capital. The Old City was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2001.
