On a pyramidal rock in the Atlantic, early Christian monks built a settlement that survives thanks to sheer remoteness. Sceilg Mhichíl illustrates like nowhere else the extremes of the monasticism that once marked North Africa, the Near East and Europe — beehive cells and oratories clinging to ledges above the ocean. Ireland's island monastery was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996.
