Skellig Michael is a steep rocky island rising 218 metres from the Atlantic Ocean approximately 12 kilometres off the Kerry coast, containing a remarkably preserved early Christian monastery established between the sixth and eighth centuries. The monastic complex occupies a saddle near the summit, reached by approximately 600 hand-carved stone steps climbing the rock face. The island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and supports one of the largest Atlantic puffin colonies in Ireland.
