Three national parks — Gunung Leuser, Kerinci Seblat and Bukit Barisan Selatan — combine into the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, 2.5 million hectares in extent. An estimated 10,000 plant species grow here alongside over 200 mammal and some 580 bird species, among them the endemic Sumatran orang-utan, and nowhere offers better prospects for conserving the island's distinctive biota. The site was inscribed as Natural UNESCO World Heritage in 2004.
