On Java's extreme south-western tip, Ujung Kulon National Park pairs peninsula rainforest with offshore islands and the natural reserve of Krakatoa — a landscape shaped by volcanoes and prized for their study. It protects the largest surviving stretch of lowland rainforest on the Java plain and the last refuge of the gravely threatened Javan rhinoceros. The park was inscribed as Natural UNESCO World Heritage in 1991.
