The Ramappa Temple at Palampet floats — almost literally: its stepped pyramidal vimana is built of porous 'floating bricks' light enough to ease the load on the roof. Begun in 1213 CE under the Kakatiya rulers and worked on for some 40 years, the sandstone Shiva temple carries carved granite and dolerite pillars and sculptures recording regional dance and Kakatiyan culture, set beside a Kakatiya-built reservoir amid fields and forested hills in Telangana. UNESCO inscribed it in 2021.
