On the arid island of Khadir in Gujarat, Dholavira preserves one of the best-surviving cities of the Harappan Civilization, occupied from about 3000 to 1500 BCE. Its fortified castle, ceremonial ground and graded neighbourhoods reveal a stratified society, while a sophisticated water system harvested two seasonal streams in a land where every drop counted. Workshops, fine jewellery and traded goods link the city to Mesopotamia and Oman. Dholavira was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2021.
