The world's third-highest peak anchors Khangchendzonga National Park in Sikkim, where plains, valleys, lakes and glaciers rise through ancient forests to snowbound summits. For Sikkim's indigenous peoples the mountain and countless caves, rivers and lakes are objects of worship, their sacred stories interwoven with Buddhist belief into the very basis of Sikkimese identity. UNESCO inscribed the park as a Mixed World Heritage Site in 2016.
