Nalanda was the Indian subcontinent's most ancient university, transmitting knowledge in organized fashion for an unbroken 800 years. Its remains in Bihar — stupas, shrines, viharas and artworks in stucco, stone and metal — reach from the 3rd century BCE all the way to the 13th century CE, tracing Buddhism's growth into a religion with great monastic schools. The Nalanda Mahavihara was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2016.
