Older than the Himalaya, the Western Ghats run down India's western flank as one of the eight 'hottest hotspots' of biological diversity on Earth. Their high montane forests temper the tropical climate and help drive the Indian monsoon, harbouring superb non-equatorial tropical evergreen forest and at least 325 globally threatened species of flora and fauna. The serial property was inscribed as Natural UNESCO World Heritage in 2012.
