Mosi-oa-Tunya / Victoria Falls

Mosi-oa-Tunya — 'the smoke that thunders' — is the local name for the curtain of water where the Zambezi, here two kilometres wide, drops abruptly into a zigzag of basalt gorges on the Zambia-Zimbabwe border. The spray column can be seen from twenty kilometres away and waters a small rainforest facing the falls. Among the largest waterfalls on Earth by any measure, Victoria Falls was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1989.
