Champaner-Pavagadh compresses whole eras into one landscape: chalcolithic sites, an early Hindu capital's hill fortress, and the 16th-century capital of Gujarat — the only complete, unaltered Islamic pre-Mughal city to survive. Palaces, mosques, residential quarters and waterworks spanning the 8th to the 14th century lie largely unexcavated, while pilgrims still climb Pavagadh Hill to the Kalikamata Temple. The park was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2004.
