Bodh Gaya is where the Buddha attained Enlightenment, making the Mahabodhi Temple Complex one of the four holiest places of Buddhism. Emperor Asoka raised the first temple here in the 3rd century BC; the present structure, from the 5th or 6th century, counts among the earliest all-brick Buddhist temples still standing in India, a landmark of the late Gupta period. UNESCO inscribed the complex in 2002.
