Sanchi is the oldest Buddhist sanctuary still in existence. Crowning a hill some 40 km from Bhopal, its stupas, monolithic pillars, temples and monasteries date mostly from the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, and the place remained a major centre of Indian Buddhism into the 12th century AD. The monuments were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1989.
