Where Himalayan foothills subside into alluvial grasslands and tropical forest, the Manas sanctuary in Assam protects an exceptional roll-call of threatened wildlife — the tiger, Indian rhinoceros, Indian elephant and the diminutive pygmy hog among them. This gentle-sloping reserve was inscribed as a Natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
