The floodplains of Assam hold the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses on Earth, and Kaziranga National Park is their stronghold. One of the last corners of eastern India little touched by human presence, the park also shelters tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, plus birds in the thousands. Kaziranga was inscribed as a Natural UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985.
