Konârak is a chariot built of stone. Facing the sunrise on the Bay of Bengal, the 13th-century Sun Temple renders the vehicle of the sun god Surya at monumental scale, complete with 24 carved wheels rich in symbolism and a team of six straining horses. Among the most famous Brahman sanctuaries in India, it was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1984.
