Along more than two kilometres of basalt cliff near Aurangabad, 34 monasteries and temples were hewn straight from the rock between AD 600 and 1000. Ellora is both an artistic summit and a feat of engineering, and its Buddhist, Hindu and Jain sanctuaries standing side by side speak of the tolerance of ancient India. The caves were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1983.
