Group of Monuments at Pattadakal

At Pattadakal in Karnataka, the Chalukya dynasty staged a 7th- and 8th-century experiment: temple builders fused the architectural languages of northern and southern India into one harmonious style. Nine Hindu temples and a Jain sanctuary survive, crowned by the Virupaksha Temple, raised around 740 by Queen Lokamahadevi to mark her husband's victory over southern kings. The group was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1987.
