Tokaj means wine, and has for centuries. Across low hills and river valleys in northeastern Hungary, vineyards, farms, villages and small towns — undercut by historic networks of deep wine cellars — display every stage in the making of the famous Tokaj wines, whose quality has been strictly regulated for nearly 300 years. The historic wine region was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape in 2002.
