Millenary Benedictine Abbey of Pannonhalma and its Natural Environment

Benedictine monks arrived on this Hungarian hill in 996 and their successors never left. From Pannonhalma the order helped convert the Hungarians, founded Hungary's earliest school and produced, in 1055, the first document ever written in the Hungarian language. The abbey buildings, the oldest parts dating from 1224, layer a millennium of architectural styles and still shelter both the monastic community and a school. UNESCO inscribed the millenary abbey in 1996.
