The Puszta is Hungary's horizon-wide grassland, and Hortobágy National Park preserves its greatest expanse: plains and wetlands in the country's east where herders have grazed their animals for more than two millennia. The value here is cultural as much as natural — an unbroken pastoral tradition written across a vast open plain. UNESCO inscribed the Hortobágy as a cultural landscape in 1999.
