The world's smallest state holds an incomparable density of genius. Vatican City centres on St Peter's Basilica — the largest religious building on Earth, raised over the Apostle's tomb and shaped in turn by Bramante, Raphael, Michelangelo, Bernini and Maderno — fronted by its colonnaded circular piazza and surrounded by palaces and gardens holding the papal collections. The entire state was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1984.
