On the heights above Haiti's northern plain stand the Citadel, the Palace of Sans Souci and the works at Ramiers, raised in the early 19th century in the first years of Haitian independence. Built by former slaves who had fought their way to freedom — the first monuments of their kind anywhere — they are read worldwide as emblems of liberty itself. The National History Park was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1982.
