Beneath the burial mounds of Vergina in northern Greece lies Aigai, first capital of the Kingdom of Macedonia. Its monumental palace was rich with mosaics and painted stuccoes, and its cemetery counts over 300 tumuli, some reaching back to the 11th century BC. The Great Tumulus concealed a royal tomb identified as that of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Aigai was inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1996.
