Samos has drawn settlers since the 3rd millennium BC, and two monuments distil that long history: Pythagoreion, the island's ancient fortified port with its Greek and Roman remains and an astonishing tunnel-aqueduct bored through the mountain, and the Heraion, the great temple of the Samian Hera. Together they were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 1992.
