Three monasteries far apart — Daphni near Athens, Hosios Loukas near Delphi, and Nea Moni on the island of Chios — form a single artistic family. Each church follows the cross-in-square plan crowned by a broad dome resting on squinches, and each glows with 11th- and 12th-century gold-ground mosaics and marble work from the second golden age of Byzantine art. UNESCO inscribed the trio on the World Heritage List in 1990.
