Spilling down a Peloponnesian hillside like a theatre, Mystras — the 'wonder of the Morea' — grew around a fortress raised in 1249 by William of Villehardouin, prince of Achaia. Byzantines, Turks and Venetians each held the city in turn before its abandonment in 1832, leaving a haunting medieval ruin set in glorious countryside, frescoed churches included. Mystras entered the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1989.
