From 1309 to 1523 the Knights of St John held Rhodes and rebuilt it as their island stronghold. The walled city they left is one of the finest Gothic urban ensembles anywhere — the Grand Masters' Palace, the Great Hospital and the cobbled Street of the Knights threading the Upper Town — while Ottoman-era mosques and baths mingle with Gothic streets below. The Medieval City of Rhodes has been UNESCO World Heritage since 1988.
