A peninsula governed by monks: Mount Athos has been an Orthodox spiritual centre since 1054, autonomous since Byzantine times and closed to women to this day. Around twenty monasteries remain inhabited by some 1,400 monks, and their layout and school of painting shaped Orthodox art as far away as Russia. The Holy Mountain was inscribed by UNESCO in 1988 as a Mixed World Heritage Site, honouring nature as well as faith.
