Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae

High in the lonely mountains of Arcadia stands the Temple of Apollo Epicurius at Bassae, raised around the middle of the 5th century BC to Apollo in his twin roles as healer and sun god. It preserves the oldest Corinthian capital ever found and fuses Archaic severity with Doric calm and bold structural experiment. In 1986 it became Greece's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
