Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schachen and Herrenchiemsee were the fantasy worlds of King Ludwig II, built in Bavaria's alpine country between 1868 and 1886 as private refuges steeped in Wagner's operas, Versailles and German legend. Behind their historicist stagecraft lay advanced 19th-century engineering. Opened to visitors shortly after the king's death in 1886, the four palaces were inscribed together as UNESCO World Heritage in 2025.
