Commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the late 19th century, Neuschwanstein sits on a rugged crag above the village of Hohenschwangau in the Allgäu Alps. Its Romanesque Revival towers were modelled in part on medieval German fortresses and inspired later castle architecture worldwide. The Marienbrücke suspension bridge above the Pöllat Gorge provides the iconic elevated viewpoint across the main facade.
