Few schools changed the look of the modern world as thoroughly as the Bauhaus, active only from 1919 to 1933. Its surviving buildings in Weimar, Dessau and Bernau — from the Dessau school building and Masters' Houses to the ADGB Trade Union School added in a 2017 extension — are founding documents of Classical Modernism in built form. UNESCO inscribed the ensemble on the World Heritage List in 1996, recognising a movement that fused austere design, function and social reform.
