For a few decades around 1800, the small Thuringian town of Weimar became a beacon of European culture, drawing Goethe, Schiller and a constellation of writers and scholars into its orbit. The palaces, houses and landscaped parks they left behind reflect that golden age, when a modest court punched far above its weight in the life of the mind. UNESCO inscribed Classical Weimar as a World Heritage Site in 1998.
