The chapel that Charlemagne raised at Aachen around 790–800 was the burial place and coronation church of an empire. Its octagonal domed core, inspired by the churches of the Byzantine East, was later enlarged with a soaring Gothic choir, and generations of German kings were crowned beneath its vaults. UNESCO inscribed Aachen Cathedral as a World Heritage Site in 1978, among the very first sites ever listed.
